An infants’ swimming instructor has warned parents about the one colour they should avoid when buying children’s swimwear.
Nikki Scarnati shared a now-viral TikTok video urging parents to avoid dressing children in blue bathing suits because they are harder to spot in water.

“This is why you do not put your children in blue bathing suits,” said Scarnati, a certified infant swim instructor from the US.
The mum filmed her young daughter swimming with a blue bathing suit to demonstrate just how easily camouflaged she was underwater - whether in a backyard pool or a crowded beach.
“So this is not a bathing suit my daughter wears on a regular basis. I bought it on clearance specifically for this example for parents who want to learn,” Scarnati explained.
The video showed her daughter swimming along a pool before she ducked underwater - proving just how dangerous it is for kids to wear blue bathers.
“Look how difficult it is to see her under the water,” Nikki said.
“And this is in calm water, this is not with a whole bunch of other kids playing, splashing around and having a good time.
“Even look in the sunlight, look how difficult it is to see her with the bathing suit on because it’s the same colour as our environment.
“So do not buy blue bathing suits guys. Just don’t do it.”
For those looking to buy swimwear for kids, Nikki recommends bright colours.
“Always stick to neon colours,” she said.
Her video has been viewed more than 5.1 million times, with many parents confessing they never knew blue was a colour to avoid.
“That’s crazy. I would have never even thought about it wow,” one said.
Another added: “I must say this is something I never thought about.”
While one suggested: “Damn! That’s f***ing great advice! Thank you!”
Many lifeguards agreed with Nikki’s statement, with one suggesting: “This is absolutely right! Any shade of blue is difficult to see, and so is any pastel light colour in general.
Another said: ”As a lifeguard, it definitely helps having them in bright colours especially if the pool is busy. Prevent the risk.”
While one added: “Lifeguard of six years here - this is 10000 per cent on point! So many little ones are at risk when we have trouble seeing their full outlines. Please parents, just go for the bright colours.”
Meanwhile, some insisted they could spot the little girl “clear as day” in the water because her head, arms and legs were visible.
However, Nikki quickly responded: “I’m saying that having blue bathing suits makes X amount of the body more difficult to see.”
Many quickly offered their own explanations.
“You guys are forgetting if she was completely under the water it would be really hard to see her. Those extra seconds can cost someone their life,” one said.
Another added: “Before you all start with ‘I can see her skin’, it’s harder to see in the sun when they’re at the bottom of the pool, especially in blue like (Nikki) said.”
Other parents revealed they have always opted for brightly-coloured swimwear for their kids.
“My kids will forever wear neon everything so I can clearly spot them no matter where they are,” one said.
